Reclaiming Venus in the City that Never Sleeps
Through our ArcGIS Story Map virtual tours and the accompanying transcripts, you can gain insight into Alvenia’s life through her relationship with New York City. Hear her voice and see visual representations of things that are important to her while exploring the city that never sleeps.
The first tour is for those in New York City who want to travel in Alvenia’s shoes as she darts from place to place and story to story.
The second tour is for those who are unable to physically be in New York or to travel around the city. While this tour includes all the same great content of the walking tour, it privileges the narrative arc of Alvenia’s story.
Each tour has a full transcript of all the audiovisual clips.
We thank the Simpson Center and the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Washington as well as the National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant for the generous funding support. We are also grateful for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and their incredible archives. Finally, this project would not have been possible without the hard work of Hayley Park, Ollie Gordon, and Verletta Kern and the insights of the 2021 Simpson Center Digital Humanities Summer Fellows.
